Abstract

Literature Garden The Cultural Passage Through Time The up-coming research is a historic adventure, looking into the history of a land from a pedagogical point of view. The tendency is to familiarize the audience with a side of Irans history which has been hidden from the media, and consequently from the global eyes for ages. The study brings up some basic issues about Iran todays situation. It talks about a social evolution constantly being ill-defined and ill-considered both nationally and globally. Interestingly, every time a social turning point emerges in Irans history, the trace of years of individual and social endeavour is evident. Considering the socio-political situation of Iran, and its last two centurys history, it could be stated that the mutual understanding (both nationally and globally) may be the means to resolve the present days social complications. The idea is to re-read the history, in order to re-think the historic experiences, and share it with the other cultures. Iran's history and culture which we are aware of today, has been transmitted by means of the Iranian's verbal culture. Iranians has centuries of oral culture which has converted to a verbal culture through the centuries. The Persian literature is the fruit of the mentioned procedure. Looking to the Iranian culture, the history, literature and architecture are the elements which shaped it. The up-coming project aimed to translate the mentioned elements to spatial
elements in order to delineate the concepts they shared with the visitors. The language we employed to transmit the ideas is a modern one, a discrete and pure language which has been the backbone of the process of design as well. National pavilions in international expos, in terms of concept, confront different levels of sophistications. In order to define the conceptual definition of international expos, some terms need to be re-interpreted: Time and Location Considering the theme of the expo 2015, the idea of a national pavilion may be described as follows; Re-framing a long span of time and space in a short time and a different environment. From Sassanid empire, the idea of “Iranianism” or “Persianism” was designed by the empire, in order to be able to cover different tribes, races and ancient-time nations under the same umbrella. Consequently the common point of this population was the “common land” which could be rephrased as “public land” shared by the people and the authority. This could be the definition of the Iranian pavilion as a public place. Cultural Translation and Temporary-relation The relation of the occupants of an international pavilion is a very specific one, based on temporary relation which can be called a visit, while they seek for entertainment and enjoyment in the same time. Along with the mentioned intentions, education is the other provocative factor to be kept in mind. The concepts need to be translated to non-stereotypic, conceptual and understandable issues. The idea is to keep far from a fast-food style, pop art and not to try to keep the issue in a very complicated level neither. Design Approach As mentioned before, through our research we came up with the idea of introducing the Iranian culture by means of the pavilion. Splitting up the culture, to three subcategories; History History is chosen as the side-topic of the pavilion. The reflection of the historic study is evident in the hierarchy of the spaces and spatial sequence which contributes to the Persian architecture principles as well. Architecture The literature garden is an interpretation of Persian gardens in which the spatial structure of the Persian garden is evident. Meanwhile, under the skin of the garden, the exhibition spaces are flowed. Literature The alphabets, words and poems, are the different elements which -as a metaphor wovened the fabric of the pavilion. They sequence of composition of literature elements is reflected through the pavilion from the entrance to the roof top.
