The identity of the Mediterranean Sea could be defined as multiplicity and diversity, with the coexistence of different landscapes, environments, people, cultures, and religions. This richness is what characterizes the cultural heritage of the Mediterranean Sea. Its geography conformation, with different civilizations facing its coasts, has determined various fluxes and exchanges all along. This network and contamination of histories and cultures allows to consider the Mediterranean Sea not as a boundary or a barrier, but as a location of meetings and currents. In this case, the water could be considered as an element that connects rather then divides, considering the sea as a “liquid archive” (Chambers, 2007). The aim of our design proposal is to represent this kind of contamination between cultures and to express the open and multiple nature of Mediterranean Sea, telling the stories of people and the cultural influences between East and West, North and South. All these stories will be the ‘collection’ of a museum that has to represents the liquidity and multiplicity of the Mediterranean Sea, also with its configuration. The “liquid museum” is a mobile structure that reflects its “open” and porous nature, travelling in the sea and docking to the Mediterranean coasts. It consists in a ship with platforms floating in the Mediterranean Sea and bringing stories of art, music, food, literature and architecture as vehicle for the representation of Mediterranean hybridization. In particular we choose an oil tanker, symbol of this world of exchanges and meetings, of trade and commerce. The Liquid Museaum, as we called this ship, will travel on the sea becoming an archive and a centre of research during the navigation, and a site for performance when is docked. The platforms could become site for workshops, events, concerts and performances allowing new hybridizations. The “liquid museum” would be an open system that stimulates that dialogue and hybridization between cultures. The idea to ‘navigate’ around the Mediterranean Sea, touching its landsides, is a way to represent its history of hybridization and make it know.
L’identità stessa del Mediterraneo potrebbe essere definita molteplice, proprio per la presenza di differenti paesaggi, popoli, culture e religioni. La ricchezza e la diversità sono ciò che contraddistingue il patrimonio culturale del Mediterraneo. La sua conformazione geografica, con la presenza di diverse civiltà che si affacciano sulle sue coste, ha da sempre determinato flussi e scambi. Fin dal passato il suo principale ruolo coinvolgeva aspetti del commercio, degli scambi e dei passaggi. La ricerca si è sviluppata a partire dal patrimonio culturale del Mediterraneo, il patrimonio ambientale, geografico e storico, affiancato da un’analisi più specifica delle aree ricche di scambi e flussi. Questo network, rete di storie e culture, permette di considerare il Mediterraneo non come una barriera o un limite, ma come un luogo d’incontri. L’acqua viene cosi considerata come un elemento che connette e unisce piuttosto che dividere, considerando il mare come un “archivio liquido” , come l’ha definito l’antropologo e sociologo Iain Chambers. In quest’ottica il Mediterraneo diventa un archivio fluido, che è insieme sonoro, visivo, e poetico. L’obiettivo della nostra proposta progettuale è quello di cercare di rappresentare questa contaminazione tra le diverse culture e di esprimere la natura aperta e molteplice del Mediterraneo, raccontando le storie di persone e di influenze culturali tra Est e Ovest, Nord e Sud. Tutte queste storie diverranno parte della “collezione” di un museo che ha il compito di rappresentare la liquidità e la molteplicità del Mediterraneo, in particolare attraverso la musica e il cibo. Questo “museo liquido” è una struttura mobile che viaggia nel mare e si attracca sulle coste del Mediterraneo come veicolo e rappresentazione dell’ibridazione mediterranea. In particolare abbiamo scelto una petroliera, simbolo del mondo degli scambi, dei flussi, degli incontri, e del commercio, dentro la quale abbiamo progettato un archivio, un centro di ricerca e inserito delle piattaforme, unità mobili che possono staccarsi dalla nave e raggiungere più facilmente le coste.
