The redevelopment of Zhejiang primary silk manufactory. A project of redevelopment and urban renewal of a postindustrial district in contemporary China

In the 90s the silk manufacture has experienced a crisis in China. Although still running today, Zhejiang Premier Silk Manufactory is declining. Located north to the town of Chang An, It was once one of the largest silk manufactories in China. One could say that the history of the factory is a vivid representation of the modern history of the town, or the silk manufacture in China. As all know, silk has been for many years an iconic symbol for Chinese production. It is a great disappointment that depression of the factory caused the depression of the town, which also took away people’s memories about silk manufacture. Therefore, the main objective in this project is, how to attract people’s interest to silk industry, how to vitalize the town and how to let people know the culture and lives on the canal by renovating the factory? The project presents complex analyses of the history, geography, culture of the factory and the area. During the project process, various cases are studied and so are criticized and listed in the report. As a result, the project has proposed basic strategies for the whole area and a complete renovation scheme for the factory, trying to answer the questions that are raised above. The project shows also a practical attempt to discuss those most popular topics in China.

Negli anni '90 la produzione della seta ha vissuto una crisi in Cina. Anche se ancora in corso oggi, Zhejiang Premier Silk Manifattura è in declino.
