The traditional forms of housing no longer meet the needs of many people. The current economic crisis takes us totally unprepared to tackle the current social, political and economic challenges. The need for living places which are also places of life, able to support common services, calls for new social structures that are meant not as an alternative to, but as an evolution from the traditional nuclear family. The purpose of this work is to present a critical reflection about social housing, departing "from the needs in order to get to the design principles" of the composition of a housing form based on sharing: the Cohousing. This form of intentional community, that attracts growing public interest and yet is still scarcely explored in a socio-architectural context, characterized by the integration of shared spaces for social interaction and common services that are based on self-government by consensus, is proposed as a model that supports the feeling of belonging to and responsibility towards the local community, while preserving the privacy and independence of each individual household. The flexibility of the interior and exterior spaces arises as a design principle that is able to coexist with the process of participatory planning typical of the development of cohousing initiatives. This paper aims to describe the history and meaning of Cohousing, studying the factors that have influenced and influence its spread, the most common features and the methods and procedures for its workings. Based on experiences from the global landscape and comparing their different elements, we come to an experimental project proposal of an intentional community with shared values, in the city of Vimercate (MB).

Abstract
Based on experiences from the global landscape and comparing their different elements, we come to an experimental project proposal of an intentional community with shared values, in the city of Vimercate (MB).File | Dimensione | Formato | |
