Abstract

In 1950, the federal Public Housing Authority provided a commitment for constructing 5,800 public housing units in St. Louis, 2,970 of which were allocated to the Captain Wendell O. Pruitt Homes and the William L. Igoe Apartments. Pruitt and Igoe eventually would house 15,000 tenants at densities higher than the original dwellings of the DeSoto-Carr neighborhood that the project replaced. For various reasons that are classified in scientific articles and papers, Pruitt-Igoe was not a successful redevelopment project and transferred to accumulated vandalism and poverty instead of hope and live message with high rate of crime thus, at April 1972 the St. Louis Housing Authority decided to demolish the project by explosion mission. Since 1972, for almost 40 years, the site has laid down without any predefined future program; while the death of modern architecture happened according to critics the site become a taboo in terms of failure, death and disappointment and named Unmentioned Modern Landscape these days. I came across the call of Pruitt-Igoe Now which looked for bold ideas to make the site alive regardless of disciplinary of predefined requirements or design them in order to get wide ideas as the clue of future success. It was a great opportunity to me working on the site as my thesis project while I was seeking something with urban design, social issues, architectural and landscape design involvements and Pruitt-Igoe call fulfill all such field enriched by unknown design them or title which make it much more complicated but interesting, something unusual which would be difficult to get in case of ignoring. All my studies and analysis prove this fact that city and Pruitt-Igoe both have major problems that affect each other vice-versa. I decided to shock it by promoting huge number of cultural activities and designing a unique cultural venue; improving green public spaces by conserving existing greenery on site as its residence through all these neglected years by proposing an adventure park; finally in urban design scale it proposed to reconnect city center and Loop area as the highest population density rate which also provide more proper public transport through Pruitt-Igoe; on the other hand the proposed urban design tries to make a green public area-access from down town to city central park which also considered by St. Louis municipality. Through all architectural design process, it was considered that St. Louis and Pruitt-Igoe still suffering incorrect policy making specially in terms of social issues while segregation is known as one of the most effective clues in project failure, that is why the main concept of the design process are Unity, Directionless , Continuity and fluidity simultaneously with entrance invitation through all directions......
