The bridge whereof has been studied in this thesis is Golden Horn Metro Bridge in Istanbul, Turkey. The design study of Metro Bridge across the Golden Horn has been initiated at the beginning of 2005. And it has been developed since then. Eventually, it has been started to be constructed in 2011. As the metro bridge over Istanbul’s Golden Horn begins to take shape, it raises a number of urban conditions in regards to Unkapani area and Beyoglu area. Several city chambers, architects, and numerous citizens have said that the bridges trestles have been built in a way unlike the plans and are ruining the silhouette of the city’s historical peninsula. In this thesis, a re-development of the bridge has been proposed to eliminate all the negative effects of the current version of the metro bridge.

Abstract

This thesis is about a challenge of designing a condition where a metro bridge can respond not only to the urban transportation situations but to social and biotic conditions. This main study is followed by an investigation about creating new urban situations and micro-economic systems on the waterfront areas between Unkapani Bridge and Galata Bridge.
