Key risk indicators : a new reference framework

This dissertation places itself within the Enterprise Risk Management field of research and focuses on Key Risk Indicators (KRIs): a tool used for proactively controlling and managing the increasing number of risks affecting enterprises. Despite their usefulness, literature does not provide a uniform framework to analyze and implement these indicators, leading to a less effective management of enterprise risks. This research contributes in creating a complete and integrated overview on the topic and it offers a clear and broad picture on the theory behind these indicators and the possible applications in the real-life contest. The work is particularly innovative because it develops both theoretical and applied perspectives. At a first stage, the study suggests a complete framework that could help risk managers effectively implementing KRIs. At a second stage, the research presents some real cases in which KRIs have been used, showing the added value that this tool can generate and the relevance of the framework identified.

Questa tesi si inserisce nell’ambito di ricerca dell’Enterprise Risk Management e si focalizza sui Key Risk Indicators (KRIs): uno strumento utilizzato per controllare e gestire proattivamente il numero crescente di rischi che influenzano l’attività delle imprese. Nonostante la loro utilità, la letteratura non fornisce un framework uniforme per analizzare tali indicatori e ciò contribuisce ad ottenere una minore efficacia nella gestione dei rischi aziendali. Questa ricerca contribuisce a creare un’ overview completa e integrata su tale argomento, fornendo un chiaro ed ampio quadro sulla teoria alla base di tali indicatori e le possibili applicazioni nel mondo reale. Tale lavoro risulta essere particolarmente innovativo poiché sviluppa sia l’aspetto teorico che quello pratico. In primo luogo, tale studio propone un framework completo che potrà essere utilizzato dai risk managers al fine di implementare in maniera efficace i KRIs. In secondo luogo, la ricerca presenta alcuni casi reali in cui tali indicatori sono stati utilizzati mostrando il valore aggiunto che tale strumento è in grado di generare e l’importanza del framework identificato.
