This Master Thesis has three purposes: to present the phenomenon of crowdfunding, its nature and its current legal framework; to investigate the existence of the herd behavior in the decision to support a project and to understand the role played by some variables in the success of crowdfunding projects. We performed an empirical analysis on 1,082 projects launched on the U. S. crowdfunding platform Kickstarter between November 2012 and March 2013 in the categories of Design, Technology and Videogames. The results show, on the one hand, that the effect of herding clearly exists; on the other, that the funding raised by a project is positively related to the number of images provided in the project description, to the duration of the campaign in days, and to the legal status of “company” of the proponent. In addition, collecting 25% or more of the target capital in the initial sixth from the start of the project significantly increases the chances of success of the project.
