This thesis is aimed at developing and validating a numerical model of the vibro-acoustic behavior of a grand piano, in order to analyze the effects of specific design solutions on the performance of the instrument. A structural model of the soundboard and the case of the piano has been realized using Finite Element Method (FEM) and simulating the manufacturing process of the soundboard. An experimental modal analysis was carried out to validate the results. Particular attention has been paid to the rim of the Instrument in order to investigate the dynamic behavior and the contribution in terms of acoustic emission. A Boundary Element model (BEM) of the piano has been developed using the FEM results in order to allow a comparison, in terms of acoustic performance, between different structural solutions.

Abstract
This thesis is aimed at developing and validating a numerical model of the vibro-acoustic behavior of a grand piano, in order to analyze the effects of specific design solutions on the performance of the instrument. A structural model of the soundboard and the case of the piano has been realized using Finite Element Method (FEM) and simulating the manufacturing process of the soundboard. An experimental modal analysis was carried out to validate the results. Particular attention has been paid to the rim of the Instrument in order to investigate the dynamic behavior and the contribution in terms of acoustic emission. A Boundary Element model (BEM) of the piano has been developed using the FEM results in order to allow a comparison, in terms of acoustic performance, between different structural solutions.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
