La butega. The encounter of artisan tradition and DIY innovation in the new making space

In recent years we have been witnessing a crisis that struck the global economy, raising major complaints about an immaterial system such as that of financial economy. We started to ask questions on labor flexibility, instability and speed, too often considered as the ingredients of success. May the mass production and standardization be the panacea? May abstract knowledge be separated from knowledge of making? More and more people seem convinced of the opposite, and has begun to reflect on manual labor and intelligence of those who work with their hands. Starting from the United States, where we witnessed the recovery (social and economic) of the value of manual work and craft, there are many who believe that the future necessarily has the need to rediscover the makers. This could mean a lot for a country like Italy, the worldwide home of craftsmanship and small and medium enterprise, if the figure of the craftsman will have the ability to renew itself, associating with the potential of the web, of the new media, and of the new technological tools. Labutega presents itself as new a making space inserted into the urban fabric of Milano, a meeting point between tradition and innovation, and a catalyst for a crucial process for the Italian cultural and social development.

Negli ultimi anni siamo stati testimoni di una crisi che ha colpito l'economia mondiale, sollevando grandi lamentele su un sistema immateriale come quello dell' economia finanziaria. Abbiamo iniziato a porci domande sulla flessibilità del lavoro, l'instabilità e la velocità, troppo spesso considerati come gli ingredienti del successo. Che la produzione di massa e la standardizzazione possano essere la panacea? Può la conoscenza astratta essere separata dalla conoscenza del fare? Sempre più persone sembrano convinte del contrario, e hanno iniziato a riflettere sul lavoro manuale e l'intelligenza di chi lavora con le mani. A partire dagli Stati Uniti, dove abbiamo assistito alla riscoperta (economica e sociale) del valore del lavoro manuale e artigianale, sono in molti a credere che il futuro abbia necessariamente l'esigenza di riscoprire i makers. Questo potrebbe significare molto per un paese come l'Italia, la patria mondiale dell' artigianato e della piccola e media impresa, se la figura dell'artigiano avrà la capacità di rinnovarsi, di associarsi con le potenzialità del web, dei nuovi media, e dei nuovi strumenti tecnologici. Labutega si presenta come nuovo spazio inserito nel tessuto urbano di Milano, un punto di incontro tra tradizione e innovazione, e come catalizzatore di un processo cruciale per lo sviluppo culturale e sociale italiano.
