There is broad awareness that humanity is facing and will face – in the coming years – even more threats to its survival due to the environmental reasons. To properly address these issues, many thoughts, ideas and terms have been developed and sustainable development has risen to the scene as one that is clearly favored amongst organisations, especially among companies. It has certainly become an important term regarding environmental problems, but it has also a broader meaning of Triple Bottom Line. Abstract

In this work, we will absorb in sustainability concept and its sub-concept of Triple Bottom Line. The TBL framework involves economic, environmental and social pillars. In the first part of the work, we elaborate on the TBL and seven revolutions which function as driving factors for it. Even though it is an important and popular concept, sustainability has some drawbacks. These shortcomings are analysed in in this work with a special focus on TBL. Due to the idea’s lack of academic background, the number of criticizing articles found was low. Scarcity of scientific articles also explains partly the criticism. Despite the criticism sustainable development and its sub-concept (TBL) have received, some interesting results have been produced by companies with a sustainability focus. We look into these in the later stage of the work in which we examine eco-efficiency. We can see the link between theory and practice, and that even in our modern age notable improvements can be achieved in sustainability.
