Transformation of countryside in China under the fast urbanization background. Research and proposal for Chongming Island

Chongming, an island that belongs to Shanghai and has most of the land used for agriculture, is now facing the contradiction between the urbanization development and its rural existence. This thesis made a comprehensive study of Chongming Island, analyzing geographical, economical and social aspects and its agricultural tradition. The thesis tried to find a strategy which maintains the existing rural feature while improve the economy based on the agricultural industry, balancing the issues of environment and economy and achieving a “sustainable agriculture”.
