This thesis describes the main railway track diagnostic and maintenance activities. In particular, rail grinding (strategies, technologies, costs) has been analyzed: thanks to it, it’s possible to eliminate rail surface defects and to obtain a rail profile that matches well with train wheels, with important benefits for railway track, trains and environment. Not only rail grinding, but also wheel turning allows to optimize wheel-rail contact: for these reasons, in the last chapter a rail grinding and wheel turning costs analysis has been carried out, in a case of a metro network section. Considering a series of simplifying assumptions – rail, railway track and wheels without any defect; rail and wheel steel of the same hardness; closed ring track, only practicable in one direction; non-stop service, without neither inversion times at the terminals nor dwell times at stops – an attempt has been made to demonstrate that, starting from a wheel-rail condition without any defect, a rail grinding and a wheel turning carried out at the same time and at regular intervals can bring to the best technical and economical results.

Abstract
This thesis describes the main railway track diagnostic and maintenance activities. In particular, rail grinding (strategies, technologies, costs) has been analyzed: thanks to it, it’s possible to eliminate rail surface defects and to obtain a rail profile that matches well with train wheels, with important benefits for railway track, trains and environment. Not only rail grinding, but also wheel turning allows to optimize wheel-rail contact: for these reasons, in the last chapter a rail grinding and wheel turning costs analysis has been carried out, in a case of a metro network section. Considering a series of simplifying assumptions – rail, railway track and wheels without any defect; rail and wheel steel of the same hardness; closed ring track, only practicable in one direction; non-stop service, without neither inversion times at the terminals nor dwell times at stops – an attempt has been made to demonstrate that, starting from a wheel-rail condition without any defect, a rail grinding and a wheel turning carried out at the same time and at regular intervals can bring to the best technical and economical results.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
