Process mapping and redesign in the shipment unit of a coatings company

This thesis has as an objective the development of a project inside the shipment unit of the coatings company LECHLER S.P.A. The objectives of the project included the provision of a mapping of the primary process inside the shipment unit and the redesign of the process relative to the execution of the TNT shipments. First, an overall description of LECHLER was made. Second, a brief literature review was conducted, containing two important topics for this thesis: the business process redesign and the BPMN framework. In the third part, the first part of the project was developed, including the procedure followed to identify and map all the primary processes executed at the shipment unit. The fourth part explains how the redesign of the execution of the TNT process was conducted, from the performance analysis to the institutionalization of the new configuration. In the fifth part an additional brief analysis for the other primary processes was conducted having as a final result some punctual interventions. In the final part, the results obtained after the conclusion of the process were discussed and some propositions were made for future interventions and projects that could be developed inside the shipment unit and other departments of LECHLER S.PA: The project was based on the business process reengineering strategy and consisted in the search for tools and solutions that allowed the achievement of the objectives outlined. This support tools included the Web Ratio software for mapping processes, the use of the BPMN notation and the informatics solutions constructed with the Visual basic tool of EXCEL.

Questa tesi ha avuto come obbiettivo lo sviluppo di un progetto nell’insieme dell’unità delle spedizioni della azienda di vernici italiane LECHLER S.P.A.. Il progetto aveva due obiettivi principali: il mappamento di tutti i processi eseguiti nell’insieme dell’unità di spedizioni e lo sviluppo di proposte per il processo relativo all’esecuzione delle spedizioni con il vettore express TNT. In primo luogo è stata fatta una descrizione generale dell’azienda. Successivamente, è stata condotta una breve revisione della letteratura di due importanti argomenti riguardanti la tesi: il linguaggio BPMN e la strategia BPR (Business Process Reengeneering). Nella terza parte è stata sviluppata la prima parte del progetto, includendo la procedura eseguita per individuare e mappare tutti i processi primari eseguiti dall’unita delle spedizioni. La quarta parte spiega come la riprogettazione del processo TNT è stata condotta, dalla analisi della performance del proccesso fino all’istituzionalizzazione del cambiamento. Infine, nella quinta parte è stata condotta un'ulteriore analisi per gli altri processi modellati che ha avuto come risultato alcuni interventi puntuali sugli stessi. Nella conclusione, sono stati discussi i risultati finali del progetto ed è stato incluso un gruppo di proposte per eventuali progetti futuri che potrebbero essere condotti nell’azienda. Il progetto si è basato sulla strategia di business process reengineering (BPR) e consisteva nella ricerca di strumenti e soluzioni che permettessero il raggiungimento degli obiettivi delineati. Questi strumenti di supporto includevano il software Web Ratio per i processi di mappatura, l'utilizzo della notazione BPMN e le soluzioni informatiche costruite con lo strumento di Visual Basic di Excel.
