This thesis work is aimed to critically investigate the possibility of using shape memory alloys wires to confer a new geometry on a generic surface, obtaining controlled deformations. In particular, the attention will be focused on showing how this technology can fit the field of designing an actuation system, made up of independent modules, capable of bending itself in two main directions, achieving a wide range of different shapes, and recovering the original condition. The motion of the structure will be obtained by electrically feeding SMA wires (through an Arduino UNO board) in order to ensure, by the Joule effect, the phase transition in the material responsible for the Shape Memory Effect (SME). The motion is monitored by a Vision system (based on ARToolKit), capable to detect the position of markers placed on the device. The use of an open source board, such as Arduino, will be useful for the implementation of a low-cost control code, based on computer vision technology.

Abstract
The use of an open source board, such as Arduino, will be useful for the implementation of a low-cost control code, based on computer vision technology.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
