Pearl of Danube. Concept of integrated riverfront development for Budapest downtown

The urban life’s basic substance is living water. For thousands of years water attracted everything what we consider part of civilization: world improving ideas and dreams, routes and canals, cultures and people coming from every part of the world making interrelationships. The Danube is just like a substance of Europe, the beating metropolis on the river bank and everything that we consider European. During the Hungarian presidency of the EU commission in 2011 the Danube came under Europe’s spotlight, because after long preparations the vision based on the common culture of cities and areas along the Danube can become reality or at least a strategy – even beyond the European Union’s borders. Budapest therefore stands before a great opportunity as a host for the European Danube Strategy. The question is that how the capital can live with the opportunity that is given by the Danube. What kind of new targets it is able to draw up for itself and for the community? Is it able to use the river as a poli-functional main route or street to integrate itself for long terms into the Budapest Metropolitan space or even become the ‘capital’ for the Danube-valley? Once Budapest was called ‘The Pearl of Danube’, thanks to the old values, but are the future strategies able to polish this ‘Pearl’ to be shiny in the modern times as well? The thesis is stressing these questions...

L’elemento fondamentale della vita urbana è l’acqua: essa può essere considerata “viva” come gli altri esseri che popolano la Terra. Per migliaia di anni l'acqua ha attratto tutto ciò che consideriamo parte della civiltà: il mondo ha sviluppato tramite esso idee e sogni, percorsi e canali, culture e persone provenienti da ogni parte del mondo creando interrelazioni. Il Danubio è uno dei elementi fondamentali dell'Europa, attraversando con le sue sponde diverse metropoli e tutto ciò che consideriamo europea. Durante la presidenza Ungherese della Commissione Europea nel 2011 il Danubio si è trovato sotto i riflettori dell'Europa, perché dopo lunghi preparativi la visione basata sulla cultura comune delle città e delle aree lungo il Danubio può diventare finalmente una realtà, o almeno una strategia - anche al di là delle frontiere dell'Unione Europea . Budapest si trova quindi davanti una grande opportunità come la città ospitantedellaStrategia Europea del Danubio. La questione è come la Capitale Ungherese può convivere con la possibilità che viene offerta dal Danubio. Che tipo di nuovi obiettivi è in grado di elaborare per sé e per la comunità? E 'in grado di utilizzare il fiume come un percorso principale poli-funzionale o come percorso di integrazione per lunghi periodi nell’area metropolitana di Budapest o addirittura diventare la“capitale ” della valle del Danubio? Una volta Budapest è stata denominata 'La perla del Danubio', grazie ai vecchi valori, ma vi sono in futuro strategie in grado di lucidare questa 'perla' e renderla cosi brillante nei tempi moderni? Latesi andrà a fondo a queste domande...
