What moved us : a research about regeneration of public space in historical city center

A historically unprecedented surge of urbanization is happening in China nowadays. “Mega polis”- urbanization in concentrated way- is the one which is encouraged by the government and many institutions. Many small cities, which have their own historical city center with identity and economical, cultural features, are experiencing the dramatic development. The urban structure and the system of public space of them are facing the huge challenges and opportunities in the rapid urbanization. During the two years’ studying and travelling, we are moved by the wonderful urban space and urban life in Europe. The question we kept on asking ourselves is how the experience could be used in China. The hometowns of us are among the aiming cities. Do our humble to maintain and continue the memory is our original motivation and ultimate purpose to study public space in Europe. In order to extract the appropriate and probable approaches in western pubic space and transplant them in China, the first step is to understand the background which cultivates the atmosphere, like culture, policy and history. Secondly, we discussed the different situations of both theories and practices of regeneration of public space in China and Italy. After then, we selected the most impressive public spaces we experienced and try to analyze the distributing elements. 16 essential elements were concluded and discussed by the support of examples. Since we have been living in Piacenza for two years, we understand it well. In the following part, the historical development, current situation, the structure of public space and the organization of events in Piacenza were analyzed. Regarding to the seven most significant open spaces, we did the research by onsite survey, questionnaire and drew some conclusions. Luckily, we got the chance to have an interview with the Mayor of Piacenza face to face and to know his understanding about regeneration of public space inside of historical city center as the governor. After all the studies, we tried to answer the original question- the realistic sense of these experiences. Regarding to the urban planning, historical center and public space, some ideas were proposed.

Al giorno d´oggi l´urbanizzazione in Cina ha avuto un forte incremento come non si era mai verificato nel corso della storia. “Mega polis” – l´urbanizzazione oncentrata - é quella spinta dal governo e dalle istituzioni. Molte piccole cittá che hanno il proprio centro storico, la loro identitá e le loro caratteristiche economiche e culturali stanno vivendo questo drammatico sviluppo. La loro struttura urbana e il sistema degli spazi pubblici stanno affrontando le enormi sifde e le opportunitá dell’urbanizzazione frenetica. Durante i due anni di studio e viaggi siamo rimasti colpiti dai meravigliosi spazi e dalla vita urbana in Europa. La domanda che abbiamo continuato a porci é come questa esperienza potrebbe essere usata in Cina. Le nostre cittá di nascita sono tra le cittá in obiettivo. Mantenere e continuare la memoria é la nostra motivazione originale e l´ obiettivo di studiare i luoghi pubblici in Europa. Per poter dedurre l´approccio appropriato e credibile dei luoghi pubblici dell´ occidente e trapiantarlo in Cina, il primo passo é di capire il contesto inteso come cultura, politica e storia. In secondo luogo abbiamo discusso le situazioni differenti delle due teorie e le pratiche di rigenerazione degli spazi pubblici in Cina e in Italia. In seguito abbiamo selezionato i luoghi pubblici da noi percepiti come piú suggestivi e abbiamo cercato di analizzarne gli elementi di distribuzione. Sono stati rilevati 16 elementi essenziali e sono stati esaminati attraverso degli esempi. Da quando abbiamo vissuto in Piacenza per due anni capiamo meglio le situazioni trattate. Nella parte successiva sono stati analizzati lo sviluppo storico, la situazione corrente, la struttura dei luoghi pubblici e l´organizzazione degli eventi di Piacenza. Abbiamo analizzato i sette spazi pubblici per noi piú significativi basando la nostra ricerca su sopralluoghi e questionari e traendo successivamente delle conclusioni. Fortunatamente abbiamo avuto l´opportunitá di avere un incontro con il sindaco di Piacenza e di conoscere la sua concezione riguardo alla riqualificazione dei luoghi pubblici all´interno del centro storico delle cittá. Dopo tutti gli studi abbiamo cercato di rispondere alla domanda originale – il senso realistico di queste esperienze. Infine sono state proposte alcune idee riguardanti queste tre differenti scale: la progettazione urbana, il centro storico e lo spazio pubblico.
