This thesis reports an experimental investigation of the growth mechanisms and the structural and electronic properties of Ti and TiOx ultrathin films on the reconstructed Au(111) surface, by means of Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) and Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy (STS). First, a simple and versatile procedure for the fabrication of novel tips is presented. In particular, bulk molybdenum tips have been produced and tested on standard surfaces and then used in the analysis of Ti and TiOx nanostructures deposited on Au(111) surface. Then, an STM investigation of the growth of Ti on Au(111) up to 1.5 ML is performed in order to study the morphological properties of Ti nanostructures at various coverages. A diffusive growth model is proposed for the interpretation of experimental data. STS measurements at various coverages up to 0.5 ML show electronic features of Ti islands and suggest a strong electronic interaction between gold substrate and deposited metal. Finally, STM investigation of the growth of TiOx nanostructures on Au(111) shows the formation of five different phases and their morphological and structural properties are discussed with the help of atomic resolution STM images and Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED) patterns, while STS data provide general information on their electronic properties. This analysis reveals titanium oxide peculiar structures that were not observed on bulk TiO2 surfaces. Furthermore, the TiOx/Au(111) system can be used as a template for growing clusters and, therefore, represents an interesting system for surface science investigations of many application-relevant processes such as photocatalysis and photovoltaics.
