Modificazione come forma di durata. Patrimonio architettonico e urbano tra cura e trasformazione

The research work developed in this thesis is defined on the theme of building on the built up space, and on the role that architectural and urban design could play in the process of the re-building of the city on itself, through the regeneration of their fabrics, acting on what is already there. More specifically, exploring the possibility that the architectural and urban design could be defined as a modification design, as re-design of the built environment and as care of what already exists - which can be consider as the material of the project - that aims at the same time not to give up on one of the peculiarities of designing and building architecture: durability. This is now increasingly denied, in favour of the ephemeral, the temporary, which seems to reflect one of the features of the contemporary world: the speed and the instantaneity of its time. Can the modification, as carried out through the project that re-designs and takes care of the existing, define a new form of duration? This is the question that defines the point of view for retracing the theoretical positions in support of this hypothesis, for examining projects that can be assumed as reference for this kind of approach, and for developing design proposals that reflect on this topic in different and specific contexts. The thesis, that is divided in two volumes, is organized in a four section structure, within which theoretical positions, dialogues, case studies and the design research developed during the doctorate are examined, and through which the research strategy was defined. The four sections have references to each other in the belief that theory and practice are, in the field of architectural and urban design, closely interlinked, and that the research activity within the doctorate has to reflect this connection, being both theoretical and oriented to the design.

Orizzonte di riferimento del lavoro di ricerca sviluppato all’interno della tesi è il tema del costruire sul costruito e il ruolo che il progetto architettonico e urbano può svolgere di fronte alla possibilità che le città tornino ad essere costruite su sé stesse, attraverso la rigenerazione dei propri manufatti e tessuti, intervenendo su ciò che già c’è: sugli spazi urbani, edificati o aperti, già esistenti. In particolare si indaga la possibilità che il progetto architettonico e urbano possa configurarsi come progetto di modificazione, come ri-progettazione del costruito e come cura dell’esistente - il quale viene a configurarsi come uno dei materiali del progetto stesso - volta allo stesso tempo a non rinunciare a una delle specificità da sempre connesse al fare architettura e alle architetture stesse: la durata. Questa è oggi sempre più messa in discussione se non negata, a favore dell’effimero, del provvisorio, che sembra rispecchiare una delle caratteristiche del mondo contemporaneo, quella della velocità, dell’istantaneità del suo tempo. Può la modificazione, attuata attraverso il progetto inteso come ri-progettazione e cura dell’esistente, costituire una nuova, ritrovata, forma di durata? Questo l’interrogativo che accompagna il lavoro di tesi, all’interno della quale vengono ripercorse posizioni teoriche a supporto di questa ipotesi, indagati progetti che possono costituire allo stesso tempo espressione e riferimento per questo tipo di approccio, e infine elaborate proposte che riflettono su questo tema in differenti ambiti e contesti di riferimento. Il lavoro di tesi, suddivisa in due volumi, si articola in quattro parti all’interno delle quali vengono sviluppati approfondimenti teorici, dialoghi, esplorazioni di casi studio assunti come significativi e anche applicazioni progettuali elaborate negli anni del dottorato. Le quattro sezioni non costituiscono universi distinti ma al contrario presentano continui reciproci rimandi, nella convinzione che teoria e pratica siano, nel campo del progetto architettonico e urbano, strettamente interconnesse, e che anche l’attività di ricerca nell’ambito del dottorato non possa che rispecchiare questa interconnessione ed essere tanto teorica quanto orientata alla disciplina del progetto.
