PArC : parco dell'arte contemporanea. Recupero e riqualificazione dell'area degli ex Magazzini Generali a Bergamo

This thesis is the project of refurbishment and urban regeneration of the 32.000 m2 area of the ex-Magazzini Generali (= ex-General Warehouses), set in the south-west of Bergamo, near the rail yard and no longer in use. The area, built since the 30s of the XX century, today is the core of a Strategic Section of the City’s General Development Master Plan. While its fragmentary layout has not changed since the 70s, in the meantime the city’s urban, economic and social needs have evolved. The area, which today lacks of interest, could be a great opportunity of urban development. The thesis analyzes the historical evolution, the socio-economical and real estate context, the forecast of population growth, the architectural and urban development and the climatic conditions at a urban scale, in order to bring to light the complexity and the potential of the aforementioned area. From the synthesis of these factors have originated objectives, strategies and actions of project, which defined the Master Plan. The sustainable urban solution achieved revitalizes the area, gives it a new role function as a cultural pole and as a focus for the bordering neighborhoods, integrates itself with the City’s Master Plan for green areas. Thus, it gives benefits both to the public and private cultural institutions of contemporary art, providing adequate location and context. The acronym PArC (= Parco dell’Arte Contemporanea / Park of Contemporary Art) sums up the functions. Then the thesis focuses on the refurbishment of the silo and the nearby warehouses, in the southern parcel. The ex-Magazzini Generali (= General Warehouses) are typically defined from the architectural and urban historical point of view, even though they are not restricted. They become a well advanced museum from the museographical and technological point of view and they house the contemporary art collections of the GAMeC, without an adequate location today, and of the UBI Bank, proprietor of the area. Architectural and engineering solutions in synergy have been developed concerning the structures, the lighting, the acoustics, the technical services, to fit the complex needs of a contemporary art museum and trigger, with original solutions (e.g. the light cones), an empathic fruition of the exhibition itinerary.

La tesi consta del progetto di recupero e di riqualificazione dell’area dismessa degli ex-Magazzini Generali, con un’estensione di quasi 32.000 m2 nella periferia sud-est di Bergamo, in prossimità dello scalo merci ferroviario. L’area, edificata dagli anni ’30 del secolo scorso, è oggi al centro di un Ambito Strategico del PGT. Se i suoi assetti frammentari sono immutati dagli anni ’70, sono nel frattempo cambiate le esigenze urbanistiche, economiche e sociali del capoluogo di provincia. L’area, oggi priva di attrattive, può essere una grande opportunità di sviluppo urbano. Perché potessero emergere la complessità e le potenzialità dell’area, nella tesi sono state analizzate a scala urbana l’evoluzione storica, il contesto socio-economico e immobiliare, le previsioni demografiche, lo sviluppo architettonico e urbanistico e le condizioni climatiche. Dalla sintesi di questi fattori sono scaturiti gli obiettivi, le strategie e infine le azioni di progetto che hanno portato al masterplan. La soluzione urbanistica è sostenibile, rivitalizza l’area, la risignifica come polo culturale urbano e come “legante” per i quartieri limitrofi, la integra con il piano del verde comunale e infine valorizza, con sede e contesto adeguati, le istituzioni culturali cittadine (pubbliche e private) di arte contemporanea. L’acronimo PArC (= Parco dell’Arte Contemporanea) è compendiario. La tesi si focalizza sul recupero, nel lotto sud, del silos e degli annessi depositi degli ex-Magazzini Generali, fortemente caratterizzati dal punto di vista architettonico e della memoria storica urbana, per quanto non sottoposti a vincoli. Tali edifici si trasformano in museo all'avanguardia da un punto di vista museografico e tecnologico, per accogliere le collezioni della Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Bergamo (= GAMeC), oggi prive di una sede adeguata, e della UBI Banca, proprietaria dell’area. Sono state sviluppate in sinergia soluzioni architettoniche e ingegneristiche per le strutture, per la luce, per l’acustica e per il funzionamento degli impianti, al fine di corrispondere alle complesse necessità di un museo di arte contemporanea e di innescare, con soluzioni originali (ad esempio: coni di luce), una fruizione empatica dell’itinerario museale.
