PIXXI : a park of innovation in the Silicon Valley

The thesis deals with the design of a research center of the twenty-first century in the heart of Silicon Valley, in an area located on the border between the city of Palo Alto and Stanford University territories . The intrinsic characteristics of the chosen site are perfectly suited to the creation of an innovative center of the twenty-first century; Silicon Valley is in fact one of the richest areas of innovation and entrepreneurship in the entire planet. A significant part of the most modern and advanced technology companies was founded and is still established in the territory adjacent to the project. The challenge of creating a center that might be adapted to the new demands of an innovation park was based on the principle of creating a workspace and collaboration that would overcome the current compartmentalisation of work phases with the aim of creating an atmosphere and a space of constant comparison and iteration. For this reason, the project is composed not only as a center dedicated to the work and the creation of new start-ups but also has a detached pole Stanford University dedicated to the study of innovative processes and products , and a residential tower for the students themselves and at the same time for entrepreneurs start-ups. Through the design of these centers and the area of ​​interconnection between them the project aims to foster a climate in which the boundaries between academia and the world of work, leisure and work time, office and residence blur in order to create a unique space full of incentive and sources of inspiration.

La tesi tratta della progettazione di un centro di ricerca del XXI secolo nel cuore della Silicon Valley, in un area sita sul confine tra la città di Palo Alto e i territori dell’università di Stanford. Le caratteristiche intrinseche del sito scelto risultano perfettamente adatte alla creazione di un centro innovativo del XXI secolo; la Silicon Valley è infatti una delle aree più ricche di innovazioni e iniziativa imprenditoriale dell’intero pianeta. Una notevole parte delle più moderne e avanzate compagnie di tecnologia è nata ed è tuttora insediata nel territorio adiacente all’area di progetto. La sfida di creare un centro che risultasse adeguato alle nuove esigenze di un parco dell’innovazione è stata basata sul principio di creare uno spazio di lavoro e collaborazione che superasse le attuali compartimentazioni delle fasi lavorative con l’obiettivo di realizzare un’atmosfera e uno spazio di continuo confronto e iterazione. Per questo motivo il progetto è composto non solamente da un centro dedicato al lavoro e alla creazione di nuove start-up ma ospita anche un polo distaccato dell’università di Stanford dedicato allo studio di processi e prodotti innovativi e una torre residenziale per gli studenti stessi dell’università e allo stesso tempo per gli imprenditori delle start-up. Attraverso la progettazione di questi centri e dello spazio di interconnessione tra di essi il progetto punta a incentivare un clima in cui i confini tra università e mondo del lavoro, tempo libero e tempo di lavoro, tra ufficio e residenza sfumino con l’obiettivo di creare un unico grande ambiente ricco di stimoli e fonti di ispirazione.
