Investigation on energy efficiency for electric motors in Italian industrial manufacturing sector

Energy efficiency is a crucial issue to reduce energy consumption. A reduction of energy consumption has as consequence the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and important saving of money. We have analyzed the situation of industrial manufacturing sector in Lombardy, focusing on electric motor system, which is responsible of the taken up of about 74% of all industrial consumption of electric energy. We have individuated some interventions that can be made to enhance energy efficiency of electric motors, and we have investigated their implementation in Lombardy’s firms, according to different factors of analysis. With our work we have also tried to find out the problems (barriers) that firms have in the implementation of specific interventions, and the drivers they think more effective to solve these problems. From our study, it emerges that the higher is the number of motors, the higher is the implementation of interventions by the firms. Moreover we have noticed that the presence of an energy manager, just like having done energy audit, has a mitigatory effect on the barriers and it lead the firms to have a better knowledge about interventions and devices, that can be used to enhance the level of energy efficiency of electric motors. However, thanks to the analysis we have conducted, it appears quite clear that energy efficiency is not still completely considered by the firms as an important factor of competitiveness.

L’efficienza energetica è una tematica fondamentale nella riduzione dei consumi energetici. Una riduzione dell’energia consumata avrebbe come conseguenza la riduzione delle emissioni dei gas serra e importanti risparmi economici. Abbiamo analizzato il settore manifatturiero lombardo, concentrandoci sul sistema motore elettrico, che è responsabile di circa il 74% dei consumi elettrici industriali. Abbiamo individuato degli interventi che possono innalzare il livello di efficienza energetica dei motori elettrici, e siamo andati ad analizzare la loro implementazione nelle aziende lombarde, secondo diversi fattori di analisi. Grazie al nostro lavoro abbiamo anche cercato di scoprire i problemi (barriere) che riscontrano le aziende nell’implementazione di determinati interventi e i drivers ritenuti più efficaci per risolvere questi problemi. Dal nostro studio è emerso che più il numero di motori è elevato, più le aziende tendono ad implementare interventi. Inoltre si è notato che la presenza di un energy manager, così come l’aver fatto audit energetici, ha un effetto mitigativo sulle barriere e porta le aziende ad avere una migliore conoscenza degli interventi e degli strumenti che si possono utilizzare per aumentare il livello di efficienza energetica dei motori elettrici. Grazie alle analisi condotte però, appare abbastanza chiaro che l’efficienza energetica non sia ancora completamente vista dalle aziende come un fattore importante di competitività.
