Petroleum basin modeling often uses meshes that are obtained through a discretization of the domain dictated by stratigraphic surfaces. These structured meshes are composed of hexahedral-like elements organized in layers. In this thesis we face two problems that arise when dealing with such meshes. The first is the need to project data defined on a mesh onto a second mesh which differs in element size, domain and reference frame. For this purpose we describe an interpolation algorithm that aims at preserving the physical meaning conferred to the layers. The second problem is that of upscaling a mesh by reducing the number of layers. In order to achieve this we formulate two different problems, following two alternative approaches, both relying on graph theory, one resulting in a recursive constrained min-max problem, the other in a constrained shortest path problem. We then propose two algorithms to solve these problems in polynomial time with respect to the dimensions of the mesh.

Abstract
We then propose two algorithms to solve these problems in polynomial time with respect to the dimensions of the mesh.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
