This Master Thesis work, carried out at the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering of Politecnico di Milano, is related to the development of the TFD (Transverse Field Detector) CMOS image sensor, a device proposed at Politecnico di Milano finding place in the field of smart image sensors, and especially in systems with tunable spectral responses, i.e. able to adapt the response to the scene and to allow a multispectral image acquisition. The work mainly concerns the characterization of two types of TFD sensors: the first, a large area pixel which, for its structural features, will be considered as a reference; and a second more complex sensor, formed by a matrix of 64x64x3 pixels. The experimental activity allowed to evaluate, for both sensors, the colorimetric performances and spectral analyses. The research undertaken in this Thesis finally covered the feasibility study through finite element simulations of possible TFD structures in backside technology.
