In this work we have studied the dynamics of a swimming microorganism in the vicinity of a wall. As the Reynolds number is small, we can use the Stokes equations for the description of the motion. It is therefore possible to derive an analytical model that takes into account the hydrodynamic interactions between the bacterium and the wall. The model has been applied to the Vibrio alginolyticus, a marine bacterium with a single polar flagellum. As the filament can turn either way clockwise and counterclockwise, the microorganism is able to proceed forward and backward. The results obtained with the proposed reduced model are in good agreement with previous numerical and experimental studies and they allow us therefore to obtain a better understanding of the origin of the physical phenomena involved in the problem: the circular trajectory observed in the proximity of the wall is generated by the rotation of the flagellum and resulting counter-rotation of the head of the bacterium; the differences observed in the trajectory during the forward and backward motion can be explained by a hydrodynamic instability; the effects of Brownian forces are secondary to those of the hydrodynamic interactions.
