Abstract
In the world's energy scene, with the crisis of fossil fuels, and the growing use of renewable sources, storage systems play a key role. In Flywheel Energy Storage Systems (FESS), energy is stored as rotational energy of a flywheel, accelerated in charging mode, and slowed down in discharging mode, by means of an electrical machine and a bidirectional power converter. Thanks to recent developments in construction technologies, these systems have arisen as direct competitors compared to other storage solutions. In this thesis it is analyzed this type of storage systems, pointing out advantages and disadvantages, and possible applications. The attention has been particularly addressed to the drive that is part of the accumulator, and in particular to the control operable on it. It is then exposed a preliminary design of an induction motor based solution, highlighting its issues. Finally, it is proposed a possible application, showing the potential of a flywheel storage system and, specifically, of an asynchronous machine.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
