Abstract
Critical, technical, historical and social analysis of the musical keyboard as a prime example of user interface design, developed to control the musical instrument: a tool that produces music. The conventional keyboard can be submitted to usability and efficiency evaluations, typical of the design survey, but rarely applied by music professionals. Its usability criticality is mainly due to the irregular arrangement of the white and the black keys, as well as the consequent discrimination of the second ones. The current configuration of the keyboard - dating back to the Middle Ages - is the legacy of an empirical historical evolution, compared with the parallel developments in music theory since Ancient Greece until today. The difficult affirmation of the isomorphic keyboards - more efficient alternatives, but unknown - is a starting point for a sociological consideration about the problems in the diffusion process of innovation, about the socio-technical inertia in the product evolution and the invulnerable power of the archetype. Once identified and cataloged all types of isomorphic keyboards in comparative cards, the design tools are then applied to help to break the psychological barriers, to overcome social shyness and to give visibility to the invisible, through a problem setting strategy. Ebony and Ivory is a macro-project of the transition, towards the progressive social equality between black and white keys. The research process becomes accessible hypothesizing its concretization in potential concepts, among detecting objects, informative documents, instructive platforms and a contest for the participatory design for a future product that can be proposed when the scenario will gradually be ready to adopt it.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
