In the present work the design of a measuring hub for light vehicles is presented. The device, also called “Smart Wheel”, is a multi-axis load/torque sensor able to measure the three forces and three moments generated between the tire and the ground. The system is composed by a three spokes structure constrained to the rim wheel by means of three special joints specifically designed. The spokes deformation, sensed by means of strain gauges, provides the forces and moments acting on the wheel. Some analytical and numerical (CAD, FEM) models have been implemented in order to evaluate Smart Wheel performance. The optimal values of the device parameters (stiffness of the structure, properties of the joints, strain gauges position, etc.) have been calculated using an algorithm in according with TUV standard criteria. A limited mass sensor with good accuracy has been finally developed. Measuring in real-time wheel-ground forces and moments will allow improvements in Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC), with consequent advantages on active safety.

Abstract
Measuring in real-time wheel-ground forces and moments will allow improvements in Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC), with consequent advantages on active safety.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
