At the beginning of the 21st Century significant current account imbalances emerge between the central and the peripheral countries in the Euro Area. Those imbalances determine an increasing exposition of peripheral countries to international financing flows that jeopardizes the economic and financial stability of the entire Eurozone. What are the determinants that drive the formation of current account imbalances? What are the sources of those imbalances? Are they endemic in the actual european monetary and financial framework or rather a consequence of structural policy inadequacy? This work attempts to understand how these current imbalances arose and how it will be possible to ensure the Eurozone financial stability, safeguarding convergent countries from future balance-of-payments crises.

Abstract
At the beginning of the 21st Century significant current account imbalances emerge between the central and the peripheral countries in the Euro Area. Those imbalances determine an increasing exposition of peripheral countries to international financing flows that jeopardizes the economic and financial stability of the entire Eurozone. What are the determinants that drive the formation of current account imbalances? What are the sources of those imbalances? Are they endemic in the actual european monetary and financial framework or rather a consequence of structural policy inadequacy? This work attempts to understand how these current imbalances arose and how it will be possible to ensure the Eurozone financial stability, safeguarding convergent countries from future balance-of-payments crises.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
