Two of the most relevant problems in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC) are methanol crossover and high platinum require as catalyst. There are several papers about methanol crossover and trials to reduce it, we had found, through a literature study, that palladium barriers are the most interesting solution to this problem. The aim of this work is to start from this concept and develop a set of fuel cells with palladium barrier, insert into the membrane, to reduce methanol crossover. Cathode nanostructured electrode have been built, matching two deposition technologies (PLD and sputtering), to increase active catalyst surface in order to reduce platinum consumption as catalyst. The experimental analysis has been done for lots of DMFC, each of them with a different type of cathode electrode, treated changing the bench mark of the deposition process. First part results show that the most interesting barrier is the one not treated, we must increase proton conductivity in order to have better cells performances. Concerning the second part, we have demonstrated the possibility to considerably abate platinum consumption in DMFC cathodes and thank to the flexible deposition process it can be created different nanostructures that, in the long run, will allow to reach even better results.

Abstract
Concerning the second part, we have demonstrated the possibility to considerably abate platinum consumption in DMFC cathodes and thank to the flexible deposition process it can be created different nanostructures that, in the long run, will allow to reach even better results.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
