Thessaloníki urban waterfront. Revitalisation of the old city seaside

Thessaloniki is affected by a suffering economy resulting from the general recession and the lack of development of various sectors. All this despite the city’s strong potential, such as the coast, the sea, the port, the climate, which are exploited poorly and badly. After various analyses and site surveys, different project development opportu- nities came out. The strategy chosen is the revitalisation of the city center wa- terfront as a driving force which will lead to the reactivation of old town centers that have a strong historical and scenic beauty with its mixed archaeological and architectural heritage. The project proposal consists of the connection of two areas that have been recently transformed into a better-de- signed public spaces through a general landscape redevelopment. Along this one-km-long seaside, different spaces with various activities have been created and by doing so, we wanted to be ex- perimental by altering the type of spaces that is currently existing. Due to the fact that the city center does not offer vacant spaces to add such activities, we decid- ed to exploit one of the main potentials of the city: the sea. This project will help the city economy to be re-launched attracting visitors from all over Europe, due to the strategic location of Thessaloniki, and moreover it will improve city users’ life with the new functions that will be provided, such as harbour baths, marina, a proper fishing area, a sea square, and green areas that the city is currently lack of.

Salonicco è interessata da una economia sofferente che deriva dalla crisi gener- ale, che interessa in modo particolare la Grecia, ciononostante il forte potenziale della città, come la costa, il mare, il porto, il clima, che però vengono sfruttati poco e male. Dopo varie analisi e sopralluoghi, si sono rivelate diverse opportunità di sviluppo del progetto. La strategia scelta è la rivitalizzazione del waterfront del centro città come una forza trainante che porterà alla riattivazione dei centri storici che hanno una notevole bellezza storica e paesaggistica, con il suo patrimonio archeologico e architettonico. La proposta di progetto prevede la connessione di due aree, che sono state recentemente riqualificate, attraverso un landscape rivisitato. Lungo questo percorso, di poco più di un chilometro, si distribuiscono nuovi spazi con varie attività. Nel fare ciò, abbiamo voluto sperimentare l’alterazione del tipo di spazi attualmente esistente e, tenendo conto del fatto che il centro città non offre spazi vacanti per creare nuove funzioni, abbiamo deciso di sfruttare una delle principali potenzialità della città: il mare. Questo progetto vuole rilanciare l’econo- mia della città attirando visitatori da tutta Europa, grazie alla posizione strategica di Salonicco, ed inoltre, vuole creare nuovi spazi per gli abitanti, come le piscine pubbliche, il porto turistico, una zona di pesca adeguata, una piazza sul mare e le aree verdi di cui la città è attualmente carente.
