The debate about vacant areas in city centres has been involved Berlin too, in its representative zones such as Island of the Museums. With the background of the competition for the reconstruction of the Berlin Palace displaced on ex-former GDR People’s Parliament’s site, the design becomes a part of the contemporary debate on the renewal of vacant areas in the city centre. Starting from the archetype of open space as representative of a community, here assumed as the Agorà-square, the design considers urban architecture as in-between infrastructure and public space. This includes socially sustainable urban elements such as transit areas, waterways, and landscaping which together from the XVII century fabric of Berlin (Dorotheenstadt) and its Soviet urbanism (Alexanderplatz). Of primary importance to the design is establishing new connections between slow and fast mobility by connecting networks and creating levels within the Museum Island. Alongside the River Spree the design re-arranges the empty footprint of the previous building considering the void as the main element to shape a public compound, even better an Agorà-square, with meeting places, libraries and renewal quays. These sequences between solids and voids allow fragile memories to be cast onto the present spaces.

Abstract
These sequences between solids and voids allow fragile memories to be cast onto the present spaces.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
