Abstract
This thesis focuses on the structural optimization of a parabolic trough collector, developed in cooperation with Eni e MIT, through the use of structural bonding. A study of the feasibility of using the two-component epoxy resin replacing traditional mechanical joints, such us riveting and screwing, it is carried out. During the design of the parabolic trough, some mechanical joints were selected in order to be replaced by bonded joints, that are more efficient in mechanical strength and energetic performance, thanks to the higher expected stiffness. In fact, a less deformable parabolic trough means a more precise reflection toward the receiver and therefore an important contribute to the consistency of the investment in a solar thermal power plant using parabolic trough layout. The first part of the thesis focuses on the analysis of the marketed parabolic trough collectors, on the general description of the trough developed inside the Machine & Vehicle Design Department of Politecnico di Milano, on the analysis of the structural adhesive used, pursuant to experimental tests and numerical modeling with finite element method. Subsequently the new typologies of bonded joints was designed, replacing screws and rivets. In order to validate the choice made, experimental static and fatigue tests were designed, both in the original version and in the bonded version, with the additional purpose of comparing directly the structure response under the work loads. The experimental tests were performed also in order to confirm the differences and the analogies between the two types of joints, and to validate finite elements modeling.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
