Wastescapes

This thesis try to explore and understand the forces that caused the de- velopment of contemporary China especially in Shanghai. The economic boom of this city and the connected urbanization is completely rewriting the urban assesment of the city, and a lot of consequences are coming, expecially in the social and economical sides. Starting from the historical background of Shanghai i tried to understand what happened during the development that create urban voids in the inner part of the city: the waste- land. What happened with this urban voids? The main strategy is therefore the containment of urban limits, in order to improve the spaces inside. So the city can concentrate its energies on the development of inner areas without creating new suburban districts. The urban voids and the waste- lands become the most important resourses for the new urbanscape and also it is a viable option in the face of overwhelming destruction of tradi- tional architecture due to modernization. With this project i want to show how to integrate historical building with a new conception of chinese culture, creating a new space connected with the urbanscape of the city.
