The thesis is part of a wider research framework, ideal continuation from the work of engraving Entwurff Einer Architectur Historischen published by JB Fischer von Erlach in 1721. The attempt to apply the Fischer’s method to a collection of contemporary mass events would be instrumental to return to observing in architectural terms a group of phenomena which, although largely ignored by Modern Architecture, the post-secular society [Habermas, 2002] has not entirely erased. These events have in common their collective nature, the large-scale and the importance of the ritual as the permanent and conserving element of myth. The thesis is focused on the Sanctuary of Fàtima which, with the ability to converge 4.000.000 people a year, is the largest place of worship in Portugal and one of the most important reference point of the Marian cult in the world. In the first part a direct survey on the site during the days of peak flow of the year (the Anniversary of the Apparition, 12th-13th of May) was preparatory to the understanding of the functioning of the Sanctuary as a complex ritual machine and to redact a video-photographic documentation of his elaborate gestural choreography. The second part is the analytical body of the research and explores through different diagrams the interaction between the Sanctuary and its historical, geographical and urban context. Through some accurate flow diagrams is portrayed the set of secred movements in order to describe the maximum permitted performance of the Sanctuary. The third and final part is an attempted to re-develop a project (in Fischer’s terms) for the Sanctuary of Fatima which arises entirely from the sacred movements; researching the contrast between the particular and the universal through a more intimate relationship between the architecture and rituals, abide by the precise and profound sense of the liturgical action. The project will have the formal ambition to interact and influence the wider urban context: the prayer areas are therefore complemented with an accurate set of spaces that can serve the community in all its logistical needs.
