This thesis deals with the main energy problems in a Mediterranean climate that need to be considered in a university building. The structure which was designed creates a link between one of the entrances to the campus and an area rarely employed: the living bridge is to be a place for study and recreation and, at the same time, a passage way, where modern technology that is esthetically pleasing contrasts with the original architectural construction. Heating and cooling problems have been approached, firstly with passive systems and where this is deemed insufficient, renewable energy sources have been privileged. A reserve system based on fossil fuels was set up thereby minimizing pollutants into the atmosphere. Thermal control is obtained through the use of external shading system (which gives constant protection against direct sunlight), insulation and thermal inertia that allows heat to be accumulated and released according to the natural day|night cycle. When weather conditions are optimal, the building is cooled by natural ventilation; however, when weather conditions are extreme, a forced ventilation system is enacted. Therefore, all the openings in the building have been studied with analytical models. These innovative technologies mean significant energy saving, ensuring a high performance classification (low carbon building): therefore considerable reduction in costs can be achieved. From a structural point of view the use of plates has been the perfect solution for all the needs such a complex structure faced, allowing therefore for maximum freedom of design and flexibility.

Abstract
From a structural point of view the use of plates has been the perfect solution for all the needs such a complex structure faced, allowing therefore for maximum freedom of design and flexibility.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
