Review of the FORMAT methodology for technology forecasting through a pilot application in the home appliances industry

The thesis presents the assessment of the FORMAT methodology that has been performed downwards a real case study in the field of home appliances manufacturing. FORMAT methodology is an approach for technology forecasting built according to the needs of decision making of manufacturing industries. Its stage-gate framework grants the ease of adoption by companies which have to deal with a process whose product is the forecast itself. Through various technology forecasting techniques embedded in the methodology, the team can face the object of the study from different points of view. The author took active part into a real case study on coated steel sheet, in order to experience strengths and weaknesses of the forecast activity firsthand. A detailed report of all the steps that have been carried out is presented in this thesis. The assessment that followed the case study aimed at extracting feedbacks for improving the methodology, its practical use and the FORMAT handbook. Through a questionnaire and interviews addressed to the main actors involved in the latest case studies, the author collected and analysed strengths, weaknesses and suggestions for further improvements.

Questa tesi presenta il lavoro di valutazione della metodologia FORMAT, svoltosi a valle di un caso di studio nel campo della produzione di elettrodomestici. La metodologia FORMAT costituisce un valido strumento di technology forecasting, modellato sulle esigenze specifiche dei decision maker delle industrie manifatturiere. La sua struttura stage-gate rende l’attività di previsionale assimilabile a un processo produttivo, in cui il prodotto finale è la previsione stessa; questa peculiarità rende il tutto facilmente implementabile in una realtà aziendale. L’autore ha partecipato attivamente a un caso di studio incentrato sulla possibilità di adottare lamiere preverniciate in un ambito di produzione di elettrodomestici. L’esperienza ha permesso di sperimentare personalmente le principali operazioni coinvolte nell’attività di forecast previste dalla metodologia, comprendendo i meccanismi intrinseci e le maggiori criticità. A valle di questo lavoro è stato possibile eseguire la valutazione, avente come obiettivo l’identificazione dei punti di forza, debolezze e possibili miglioramenti relativi alla metodologia, la sua applicazione e il manuale FORMAT. La valutazione è stata svolta mediante questionari e interviste rivolti ai principali attori coinvolti nell’attività di forecast.
