We consider, in several contexts, the optimal asset allocation problem faced by a fund manager, who selects continuously in time an investment policy to maximize his expected utility of compensation. The dynamic of the fund is affected by the presence of inflows and outflows. The fund flows depend on the fund's performance relative to a benchmark. The manager's salary can be based on the value of assets under management at the evaluation date or exclusively on the relative performance. We find that the optimal policy is always connected to the benchmark's one and shows risk-shifting behavior or a tracking error increase in the underperformance region.

Abstract
We consider, in several contexts, the optimal asset allocation problem faced by a fund manager, who selects continuously in time an investment policy to maximize his expected utility of compensation. The dynamic of the fund is affected by the presence of inflows and outflows. The fund flows depend on the fund's performance relative to a benchmark. The manager's salary can be based on the value of assets under management at the evaluation date or exclusively on the relative performance. We find that the optimal policy is always connected to the benchmark's one and shows risk-shifting behavior or a tracking error increase in the underperformance region.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
