The area in which “Fuoriscala” is set was originally the Expo 2015 area, in the North-east of Milan. After the big world exposition, this piece of land is destined to be the seat of new start-ups, of the new campus of Università Statale di Milano, of a human technopole, as well as of a new theatre headquarter including the theatre academy and laboratories. Our project is focused on two main themes: the proposal for an urban project for the whole expo area and the design of the new theatre headquarter. The elements that most characterizes the expo area is the presence of big infrastructures (railways, highways) that represent a relevant enclosure of the site to the city. As a result, our first approach to the site was an analysis of the nearby realities, as well as of the pre-existent installations and facilities of the expo area, so that they could be a good starting point to our new urban proposal. The dominant principle that rules our urban project is the use of a dense grid, based on a module of 12mx12m. This module is conceived as a flexible and versatile space suitable for all the new previously mentioned functions expected for area. Inside this grid, some big public buildings emerge. Some of them, like the Zero Pavilion or Palazzo Italia, were inherited from Expo 2015 and we decided to convert them into new big public spaces, maintaining their architectural character. Some others are new buildings, with public functions, similar in form to the existent ones. Fuoriscala, our theatre, is one of them. Fuoriscala is an experimental theatre which represents a new reality not only in the area but also in the whole city. Its experimentability consists on the presence of spaces which allows the production of theatre performances which are different from traditional ones. This means that the public is more and more involved in the performance, breaking the traditional and rigid separation with the performers. The project is composed by three independent organic volumes in each of which we can find different halls. Two of the volumes are suspended from the ground through concrete tripods. Inside of them, we can find two experimental halls, one with a central stage and galleries, the other with a rotating parterre. The third volume has the traditional theatre hall inside and it’s directly connected to the ground floor. The three volumes are functionally and structurally independent, but all the composition acquires homogeneity through the suspended footbridges that surround them. The open air theatre, already existent in the expo area, becomes part of our project as a fourth hall, allowing open air performances. These four elements stand under a series of steel portal that create a parallelepiped which represents the ‘magic box’ of the theatre, the box in which something very surprising is going to happen. In conclusion, Fuoriscala aims to surprise the visitors not only through the theatrical performances, but also through the architectural composition. Architecture becomes the first spectacle, before the spectacle.

Abstract
The area in which “Fuoriscala” is set was originally the Expo 2015 area, in the North-east of Milan. After the big world exposition, this piece of land is destined to be the seat of new start-ups, of the new campus of Università Statale di Milano, of a human technopole, as well as of a new theatre headquarter including the theatre academy and laboratories. Our project is focused on two main themes: the proposal for an urban project for the whole expo area and the design of the new theatre headquarter.
