Puffy. Study on the affective potential and therapist interface for an inflatable mobile interactive companion for children with neurodevelopmental disorders

Social robots are becoming more and more widespread, and more often they are nowadays equipped with the actuators and the artificial intelligence needed to augment their behaviour with affective expressions. This typology of robots is particularly relevant in areas such as therapy sessions for children with Neurodevelopmental Disorders (NDD). The aim of this thesis is to present our solution in the form of Puffy, an inflatable robot designed as therapy companion for children with NDD, its affective expression system, and its control interface for therapists.

I robot sociali stanno diventando sempre più diffusi e sempre più spesso al giorno d'oggi sono equipaggiati con gli attuatori e l'intelligenza artificiale necessaria per arricchire il loro comportamento con espressioni affettive. Questa tipologia di robot è particolarmente rilevante in sessioni terapeutiche per bambini affetti da Disturbi del Neurosviluppo. Lo scopo di questa tesi è presentare la nostra soluzione nella forma di Puffy, un robot gonfiabile progettato come compagno di terapia per bambini con DNS, il suo sistema di espressione emotiva, e la sua interfaccia di controllo per terapeuti.
