Riuso e addizione. Riqualificazione e ampliamento del forte di Santa Caterina

If the theme of the reuse of the built heritage today is more clearly in the center of the debate and of the architectural practices, the project of the expansion of historical buildings through the addition of new volumes still remains a little investigated area. Although this practice has always existed, the current instances related to the transformation of historical contexts make this type of intervention increasingly complex, and translate it into a strategic opportunity to develop new reflections and experiments on the dialogue between ancient and new. Moreover, the privileged relationship that cultural institutions establish with historical buildings increases their importance and recurrence, as a consequence of the need for an ever increasing complexity of the scientific, social and spatial programs of these places. The Thesis explores the theme of addition, investigating the main design issues through the critical reading of the most significant contemporary practices, and verifies the results of this research through the retraining project of the Fort of Santa Caterina on the island of Favignana, rethinking and expanding the pre-existing spaces to host a new cultural center.

Se il tema del riuso del patrimonio costruito oggi è sempre più chiaramente al centro del dibattito e delle pratiche architettoniche, il progetto dell’espansione degli edifici storici tramite l’addizione di nuovi volumi rimane ancora un’area poco indagata. Nonostante questa pratica sia sempre esistita, le attuali istanze legate alla trasformazione dei contesti storici rendono questo di tipo di intervento sempre più complesso, e lo traducono in una strategica opportunità per sviluppare nuove riflessioni e sperimentazioni sul dialogo tra antico e nuovo. Inoltre, il rapporto privilegiato che le istituzioni culturali instaurano con gli edifici storici ne aumenta il rilievo e la ricorrenza, in conseguenza alla necessità di una sempre maggiore complessità dei programmi scientifici, sociali e spaziali di questi luoghi. La Tesi esplora il tema dell’addizione, investigandone le principali questioni progettuali mediante la lettura critica delle pratiche contemporanee più significative, e verifica gli esiti di questa ricerca attraverso il progetto di riqualificazione del Forte di Santa Caterina nell’isola di Favignana, ripensando e ampliando gli spazi preesistenti per ospitare un nuovo centro culturale.
