Chef avo : an interactive product for children with neurodevelopmental disorders to enhance the cooking experience

Neuro-Developmental Disorder (NDD) is an umbrella term for a group of disorders arising during the developmental period that is characterized by severe and often co-occurring deficits in the cognitive, social, communicative, motor, behavioural and emotional spheres. In this regard, the use of digital interactive technology is considered as a promising approach that does not replace current therapies but can be incorporated into them and support care-givers in their daily routine. NDDs is a product of the interactions between self, society, body, and the variety of interactions from political economies to personal and socio-economical commitments that they engender. From a socio-economical point of view, the rapid growth of these technological resources requires a carefully planned response by health institutions and their administrators. In addition to relevant staff development and training, this response urges to address the cost of technological resources applicable; the individuals' unique needs with which those resources will be most useful; the benefits and risks of using them; the methods for preparing care-givers and families to accept, adopt and appropriate these resources, and an organizational commitment to empirically evaluating their effectiveness and utility. Chef Avo is a Smart Product that has been designed for children with Neurodevelopmental Disorder (NDD). It can guide the recipes by voice and includes a display screen for showing images and videos of all the required utensils, ingredients, and steps along with the timer for each step and provides feedback in the form of light and voice. It can also move 360 degrees as and when required, which is activated by the voice of a user. This feature is beneficial as the children are sitting together on the table and the Chef Avo is in the centre of table. So, nobody needs to move himself/herself or change the direction of Chef Avo. Using this product, they will get access to: 1) an Interactive Product that can provide them with step by step voice guided commands for a recipe based on the 3 ingredients that they provide, which has been carefully designed by using User Centred Design Thinking paradigm, informed by the literature and by the experience gained through the years. My work aims at connecting the stakeholders and reducing inefficiencies in the cooking-therapy delivery, improving access to recipes, increasing quality, and making it more convenient, enjoyable, and precise. My wish is to empower researchers and care-givers to better manage and improve NDD individual’s health so that they can live a better, more productive lives, and improve society.

Disturbo del Neuro-Sviluppo (NDD) è un termine generico per un gruppo di disordini che si manifestano durante il periodo di sviluppo caratterizzato da deficit gravi e spesso co-occorrenti nelle sfere cognitive, sociali, comunicative, motorie, comportamentali ed emotive. A questo proposito, l'uso della tecnologia digitale interattiva è considerato un approccio promettente che non sostituisce le terapie attuali, ma può essere incorporato in esse e supportare gli utenti nella loro routine quotidiana. Gli NDD sono un prodotto delle interazioni tra la persona e la società dove influisce anche la varietà di interazioni. Interazioni che spaziando dalle economie politiche alle condizioni personali e socio-economiche. Da un punto di vista socio-economico, la rapida crescita delle risorse tecnologiche richiede una risposta attentamente pianificata da parte delle istituzioni sanitarie e dei loro amministratori. Oltre allo sviluppo e alla formazione del personale, questa risposta deve affrontare il costo delle risorse tecnologiche applicabili; le esigenze uniche degli individui con cui tali risorse saranno più utili; i benefici e i rischi del loro utilizzo; i metodi per preparare i caregiver e le famiglie ad accettare, adottare e adattare queste risorse e un impegno organizzativo per valutare empiricamente la loro efficacia e utilità. Chef Avo è un prodotto intelligente che è stato progettato per i bambini con Disturbo del Neurodevelopmental (NDD). Può guidare l’utente nella scelta delle ricette con la voce e include uno schermo per mostrare le immagini e i video di tutti gli utensili, gli ingredienti e le fasi necessari insieme al timer per ogni fase. Inoltre, include un feedback visivo e vocale. Può muoversi di 360 gradi quando richiesto, ad esempio quando attivato dalla voce di un utente. Questa funzione è utile in quanto i bambini sono seduti sul tavolo e lo Chef Avo è al centro del tavolo. Quindi, nessuno ha bisogno di spostarsi o cambiare la direzione di Chef Avo. Usando questo prodotto, avranno accesso a: 1) un prodotto interattivo in grado di fornire loro comandi vocali passo passo per una ricetta basata sui 3 ingredienti che forniscono. Il prodotto è stato accuratamente progettato utilizzando il paradigma User Centered Design Thinking, derivato dalla letteratura e dall'esperienza acquisita nel corso degli anni. Il mio lavoro mira a connettere gli stakeholder e ridurre le inefficienze nell'erogazione della terapia per esperienze di cucina condivisa, migliorare l'accesso alle ricette, aumentare la qualità e rendere la riabilitazione più conveniente, divertente e precisa. Il mio desiderio è responsabilizzare i ricercatori e i caregiver per gestire e migliorare la salute dei singoli NDD in modo che possano vivere una vita migliore, più produttiva e facilitare la loro integrazione nella società.
