Il tempo non esiste. Teorie e congetture sulla quarta dimensione

Time rules our life. It is the engine of shared calendars, it is the ritual of festivities, and yet time is the torment of those who try to understand it. So many representations have been associated with the passing of events, from science to psychology, from literature to architecture. Both as unit of measure and project variable, collected among the pages of this paper, they tell the laws of Time. Invisible and intangible, time takes shape in space and becomes real, images that are reflected in our everyday life. The analysis that I developed in recent months, and which could continue to grow in time, produced a rich and fruitful harvest as a result. The order of it is precise and it follows logics that will be illustrated step by step, according to scientific and psychological theories necessary to define something so extremely complex. It may seem a losing game from the beginning, because the concept itself is still not very clear even for those brilliant minds who have dedicated their lives to the pursuit of the laws that govern our world. From Aristotle to St. Augustine, from Ėjzenštejn to Tschumi, from Csíkszentmihályi to Boroditsky, the vision of Time in Space has been translated and interpreted in order to show how this dual concept expresses the phenomenology of the contemporary spirit. The space-time, identified by Einstein at the beginning of the twentieth century, is inextricably linked with the reality in which we are immersed, perceived through the body and the senses. It manifests itself through evolution, change and transition to uncertain and unpredictable directions of what will be. It is simultaneously past, present and future, categories of existence that are so closely inter-linked one to each other through our mind, measuring the passing of events in relation to the emotions that we experience, to the attention that we put into the actions we carry out, to our memories and our imagination. We are the joint of what has passed and what is yet to come. My thesis project has therefore examined some of the studies and artistic expressions related to the concept of Time, venturing into an interdisciplinary research, filtered through a curious and passionate gaze. I personally chose each image as a spokesperson of the message that was given to a particular nuance of Time, considering the fourth dimension as first project variable in relation to the different evaluation and perceptive factors of it. Finally, I conceived the lessons I learned as experiments and metaphors of this journey in space and time, through the translation and visualization of the research and the elaboration of the materials I collected. Immersed in the city and in the spaces of the relationship, the designed assumptions take form of the illustrated temporal categories. As small ordinary revelations, the eight elaborated actions induce and persuade contemporary travelers to indulge in the luxury of time and to meditate on it, in the Milan fog.

Il Tempo regola la nostra vita. È il motore dei calendari condivisi, il rito delle festività e il tormento di chi cerca di comprenderlo. Dalla scienza alla psicologia, dalla letteratura all’architettura, numerose sono state le rappresentazioni associate al trascorrere degli eventi. Collezionate tra le pagine di questo elaborato, esse raccontano le leggi del Tempo, inteso come unità di misura e variabile di progetto. Invisibile e intangibile, esso prende forma nello spazio e si concretizza in immagini che trovano un riscontro nella nostra quotidianità, sotto sembianze spesso mascherate. La raccolta prodotta è il frutto di un’analisi che si è sviluppata negli ultimi mesi e che potrà continuare a crescere nel Tempo, via via ampliando le categorie individuate. L’ordine è preciso e segue le logiche che verranno illustrate passo per passo, attraverso teorie scientifiche e psicologiche necessarie a definire qualcosa di estremamente complesso. Potrà sembrare una sfida persa in partenza, perchè il concetto Tempo è ancora poco nitido persino per le menti geniali che hanno dedicato la loro vita alla ricerca delle leggi che governano il mondo. Da Aristotele a Sant’Agostino, da Ėjzenštejn a Tschumi e da Csíkszentmihályi a Boroditsky, la visione del Tempo nello Spazio è stata tradotta e interpretata per mostrare come questo binomio sia diventato espressione della fenomenologia dello spirito contemporaneo. Lo spazio-tempo, individuato da Einstein agli inizi del Novecento, è indissolubilmente connesso con la realtà in cui siamo immersi, percepita attraverso il corpo e i sensi. Si manifesta con l’evoluzione, il cambiamento e la transizione verso direzioni incerte e imprevedibili di ciò che sarà. È contemporaneamente passato, presente e futuro, che sono categorie dell’esistenza strettamente legate tra di loro dalla nostra mente, la quale misura il trascorrere degli eventi in relazione alle emozioni provate, all’attenzione che mettiamo quando compiamo un’azione, ai ricordi e all’immaginazione: siamo la giunzione tra ciò che era e ciò che sarà. Il percorso di Tesi ha quindi preso in esame alcuni degli studi e delle espressioni artistiche collegate al concetto di Tempo, avventurandosi in una ricerca interdisciplinare filtrata attraverso uno sguardo curioso e appassionato. Ogni immagine analizzata è stata scelta personalmente come portavoce del messaggio attribuito a una sfumatura del Tempo, considerando i diversi fattori valutativi e percettivi della quarta dimensione, intesa come prima variabile di progetto. Infine, la ricerca e l’elaborazione dei materiali esposti mi hanno portato a tradurre e visualizzare gli insegnamenti acquisti, concepiti come esperimenti e metafore di questo viaggio. Immerse nella città e negli spazi della relazione, le congetture progettate assumono le sembianze delle categorie temporali illustrate. Come piccole rivelazioni quotidiane, le otto azioni elaborate provocano e persuadono i viandanti contemporanei, invitandoli a concedersi del Tempo e a riflettere su di esso nella nebbia di Milano.
