Design is generally considered a problem-solving practice that can almost solve any human issue. Today we particularly perceive a deep sense of trust in its ambitious mission, recognizing it as something fundamentally good. However, this optimism is not really accurate. Design declares that it wants to solve all human problems but in fact it is very often their cause. Those which are being solved are problems of the Industry not of humans. But the human being, in this sense, is not only a victim of design, he is in fact the product of it. His design actions transforms radically his environment and this will inevitably lead him to change and adapt. In this sense, man designs artifacts to the same extent that they re-design man. So if design also produces problems, then why not try to design one? In this research I explore the implications of addressing design as a problem finding activity, analyzing the motivations, characteristics, opportunities and limitations of such an approach. I tried as well to understand if and how it is possible to design a problem and what consequences may arise, analyzing several critical approaches and case studies. Reflecting finally on how man and artifacts are in a constant relationship of interdependence I developed a project named: The Adaptive Machine. This is an interactive machine that tries to stimulate a reflection on the way humans are at the same time author and victim of design by asking: What is the real form of the human being?
Il design è generalmente considerato una pratica di problem solving capace quasi di trovare un rimedio ad ogni questione umana. In particolare, oggi più che mani, si percepisce un forte senso di fiducia nei confronti di tale ambiziosa missione, riconoscendo la progettazione come qualcosa di intrinsecamente positivo. Tuttavia tale ottimismo è purtroppo poco lungimirante.Nonostante infatti il design dichiari di voler risolvere tutti i problemi dell’uomo, questo ne è molto spesso la causa. Quelli che vengono risolti sono molte volte i problemi dell’industria o di un cliente non tanto dell’uomo. Ma l’individuo in questo senso non è soltanto una vittima del design egli ne è il prodotto stesso. Le sue scelte progettuali infatti, trasformando l’ambiente in cui egli vive, lo porteranno inevitabilmente ad adattarsi mutando la sua forma. In questo senso l’uomo disegna artefatti nella stessa misura in cui questi disegnano l’uomo. Se quindi il design produce anche problemi, perché allora non provare a progettarne uno? In questa ricerca sono esplorate le implicazioni dell’affrontare il design come attività di problem finding analizzando le motivazioni, le caratteristiche, le opportunità e i limiti di un approccio di questo tipo. cercando di capire se e come sia possibile progettare un problema e quali conseguenze possano scaturire. Sono, inoltre, approfonditi i molteplici approcci di progetto critici e speculativi, contemporanei e passati portando a supporto molteplici casi studio. Riflettendo infine su come uomo e artefatti siano in un costante rapporto di interdipendenza è sviluppata una sperimentazione progettuale dal titolo: The Adaptive Machine. Questa è una macchina interattiva che cerca di stimolare una riflessione sul modo in cui l’individuo sia al tempo stesso artefice e vittima del design aprendo il quesito: Qual è la vera forma dell’essere umano?
