Nowadays, innovative approaches to protect buildings from seismic need to be developed in response to more and more complex and daring architectural projects. Viscous dampers stand out among these approaches. They are cylinder/piston devices in which the lamination of a fluid inside an hydraulic circuit allows to dissipate energy. The usage of these devices lacks of a solid normative base to which it is possible to refer, especially with regards to the behaviour of these devices when structures to protect adopt a non-linear behaviour. For this reason, the research performed in this Master Degree Thesis investigated the interaction between the inherent, non-linear, dissipation and the one generated by the usage of viscous dampers. In particular, in order to have a clearer understanding, the seismic behaviour of structures equipped with viscous dampers is studied, initially, using a 1 degree of freedom approach. Then, a frame having more degrees of freedoms is considered, adding, thus, the variables of viscous damper position and distribution of the non-linearity within the structure. Successively, criteria for optimal design of viscous dampers within the frame will be studied and different plastic hinges distributions will be compared. Finally, all the results obtained will be validated in the design and verification of a complex frame, both from the point of view of efficiency and from the one of economic feasibility.

Abstract
Finally, all the results obtained will be validated in the design and verification of a complex frame, both from the point of view of efficiency and from the one of economic feasibility.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
