Scalo Lambrate art centre and social housing

This thesis is about the possibility to give a different and new use to the borders in the cities. In this case, the abandoned train railways at Lambrate, Milano are taken as the project´s site, and here is the complexity of this place, between a barrier produced by the raised platform of the train, the city is divided by two, one interior more consolidated (Cittá Studi) and one exterior (Lambrate) with a more informal development, the project is located in the Lambrate side, in between both sides. Using the plot already commissioned by the municipality as an international competition, who seeks for a metropolitan park and social housing as the program of necessities, however for this thesis and for the particular characteristics of the plot, the main project to be developed is the art centre. The master plan organizes a big park as a new forest in the border; this park is enclosed by the art centre, a series of 4 storey houses already existent to the east, and the new housing who respects the heights of the houses. For the art centre, which is facing the train platform, the solution is to set in front, creating a new facade to the park, hiding partially the platform wall; but the main intention is the back patio created by the rough existent wall of the platform and the art centre, as well as the using of the space available under the train platform as a performing art´s addition to the project´s more formal art indoors. This gesture aims to give a solution to the borders in the city which are abandoned, are insecure, thus space abandoned and wasted that could be a possibility to create a more porous and less fragmented city.

Questa tesi riguarda la possibilità di dare un uso diverso e nuovo ai confini delle città. In questo caso, le ferrovie ferroviarie abbandonate a Lambrate, Milano sono considerate il sito del progetto, ed ecco la complessità di questo luogo, tra una barriera prodotta dalla piattaforma rialzata del treno, la città è divisa per due, una interno più consolidato (Cittá Studi) e uno esterno (Lambrate) con uno sviluppo più informale, il progetto si trova nella parte di Lambrate, tra le due parti. Usando la trama già commissionata dal comune come concorso internazionale, che cerca un parco metropolitano e l'edilizia popolare come programma di necessità, tuttavia per questa tesi e per le caratteristiche particolari della trama, il progetto principale da sviluppare è l'arte centro. Il piano generale organizza un grande parco come una nuova foresta al confine; questo parco è racchiuso dal centro artistico, una serie di case a 4 piani già esistenti ad est e il nuovo alloggio che rispetta le altezze delle case. Per il centro d'arte, che si trova di fronte alla piattaforma del treno, la soluzione è quella di mettersi di fronte, creando una nuova facciata al parco, nascondendo parzialmente la parete della piattaforma; ma l'intenzione principale è il patio posteriore creato dal muro esistente grezzo della piattaforma e del centro d'arte, nonché l'uso dello spazio disponibile sotto la piattaforma del treno come aggiunta di arte performativa all'arte più formale del progetto al chiuso. Questo gesto mira a dare una soluzione ai confini della città che sono abbandonati, sono insicuri, quindi lo spazio abbandonato e sprecato che potrebbe essere una possibilità per creare una città più porosa e meno frammentata.
