The relationship between reality and representation seems to be a timeless ontological problem. From the synthesis of the identified patterns, guidelines are drawn for a more open definition of oneself and one’s online presence, through the rethinking of the reference formats. The profile remains impossible as it escapes a single and exhaustive definition, but it can also free itself from artificial claims of authenticity and representativeness.

Abstract
The relationship between reality and representation seems to be a timeless ontological problem. If initially the virtual world was born as an imitation of the real one, today it is gradually overcoming it. Reality thus seems to exist according to its representation, reconfiguring itself to better circulate online. It is no longer the images that are modified, but the very substance of the world, in an attempt to resemble again its now unrealistic digital version. This process is reflected on the individual, who remains trapped in the inevitability of his own virtual identity. Retracing the different ways of translating the online self – from the anonymity of Web 1.0 to contemporary hyper-exposure – the research aims to outline possible alternative models. The analysis takes into consideration a series of artistic-speculative practices which, in the wake of the Finsta, provide for an unprecedented use of Instagram. From the synthesis of the identified patterns, guidelines are drawn for a more open definition of oneself and one’s online presence, through the rethinking of the reference formats. The profile remains impossible as it escapes a single and exhaustive definition, but it can also free itself from artificial claims of authenticity and representativeness.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
