Green Hill research centre. Renovation of the ex slaughterhouse area in Milan

"Green Hill Research Center" is the renovation project of an industrial building in Milan located in the area of the Ex-Slaughterhouse. The gallery under consideration has a historical importance to be enhanced both for the monumental structure and for its agri-food functions which are maintained by the proximity of the neighbouring food market. The purpose of this project is to modernize and return to give life to an abandoned area with great potential; use and adapt the space by creating a strong connection between the existing and the new project, balancing the use of innovative and modern technologies and the revitalization of the previous walls and roof. The Green Hill research center transforms the gallery into a hybrid form that combines conservation and contemporary technological design. It creates a sense of space that celebrates the present and at the same time establishes connections with both the past and the future, this connection is given by a historically rooted context and will result in a structure that will open towards the future through the function of bio-technological and agri-food research. We will try to create a flexible and receptive, historical, and contemporary environment. The project aims to merge the fields of architecture and engineering, making them interact to create a complete project in all its phases; use innovative technologies that create spaces as attractive and impressive as the structure that hosts them. At the same time, we tried to give importance to the environment, climate change, sustainability, and the reduction of CO2 emissions through passive and active strategies. The main strategy was to use greenery, to create an area that acts as a purifier of the surroundings and which at the same time acts as an interactive space, for the community and functions as interconnection with the neighbourhoods.

“Green Hill Research Centre” è il progetto di riuso di un edificio industriale di Milano posizionato nell’ area dell’ Ex Macello. La galleria presa in considerazione ha un' importanza storica da valorizzare sia per la struttura monumentale, sia per le sue funzioni agroalimentari che vengono mantenute dalla vicinanza del Mercato alimentare confinante. Lo scopo di questo progetto è quello di rimodernare e tornare a dar vita a un'area dismessa con un grande potenziale; utilizzare e adattare lo spazio creando una forte connessione tra l’esistente e il progetto, bilanciando l’uso di tecnologie innovative e moderne, e la rivitalizzazione delle mura e della copertura pregresse. Il centro di ricerca Green Hill trasforma la galleria in una forma ibrida che unisce la conservazione e il design tecnologico contemporaneo. Si crea un senso dello spazio che celebra il presente e allo stesso tempo stabilisce connessioni sia con il passato che con il futuro, questa connessione è data da un contesto storicamente radicato e si tradurrà in una struttura che si aprirà verso il futuro tramite la funzione di ricerca bio tecnologica e agroalimentare. Si cercherà di creare un ambiente flessibile e ricettivo, storico e contemporaneo. Il progetto si pone come obiettivo quello di fondere i campi dell'architettura e dell'ingegneria facendoli interagire per creare un progetto completo in tutte le sue fasi; utilizzare tecnologie innovative che creino spazi attraenti e imponenti come la struttura che li ospita. Allo stesso tempo si è cercato dare importanza all’ambiente, al cambiamento climatico, alla sostenibilità e alla riduzione delle emissioni di CO2 tramite strategie passive e attive. Come strategia principale si è scelto di utilizzare il verde, per creare un area che funga da purificatrice del quartiere e che allo stesso tempo funga da spazio interattivo, di collettività e di interconnessione con i quartieri confinanti.
