Stablecoins : stability analysis and price manipulation

Following the same rise in popularity of Bitcoin and Ethereum, Stablecoins are set to become the future of digital transactions. Indeed, given a completely different structure, these new Coin aims to maintain a stable value compared to the already proven high volatility of Cryptocurrencies. The increasing interest, along with the general lack of solid and well-oiled regulation of the Exchange Markets, has led, however, to the diffusion of illicit behavior directly connected to these Cryptocurrencies. This project will focus on one particular scheme, the Pump and Dump Scheme, which has generated over 300M $ of profit in a single year. After a stability analysis of the price, the main goal is to determine whether the Stablecoins considered, DAI and USD Coin, have been targeted by this kind of activity and can be susceptible in case of future attacks.

A seguito del popolare successo ottenuto in particolare da Bitcoin e Ethereum, le stable coin sembrano poter essere il futuro delle transazioni digitali. Grazie alla loro struttura, infatti, questi nuovi strumenti puntano a mantenere stabile il loro valore, al contrario di della già affermata alta volatilità che interessa tutte le cryptomonete classiche. Il crescente interesse, insieme alla generale mancanza di una stabile e ben organizzata regolamentazione dei mercati di scambio di queste monete, ha portato alla capillare diffusione di attività illecite direttamente connesse alle cryptomonete. Questo progetto si concentra sul rilevamento di uno schema in particolare, lo schema di Pump e Dump, il quale ha generato, in un singolo anno, un profitto di circa 300M $. Subito dopo un’analisi di stabilità, l’obiettivo principale è quello di determinare se le stable coin considerate, DAI e USD Coin, sono state soggette di questo tipo di attività e se sono suscettibili in caso di attacchi futuri.
