The Al Nouri Mosque has always been an iconic landmark for the old city of Mosul, recognized by the local community as a tangible manifestation of its cultural identity. After the deliberate destruction in 2017, only the dome structure and part of the walls of the Al Nouri prayer hall remained, while the north, west and south sides have been reduced to rubble. This area represents a historical landmark for Mosul and a spiritual repository of the city, it has a sense of belonging and identity to all Moslawis, and the traditional spirit of the historic city, a place of multicultural creativity, peace and prosperity. Rebuilding one of the most significant Mosul's urban symbols and restoring the Al Nouri Mosque to its rightful place as the main mosque of Mosul should not be seen only as an action of physical reconstruction, but as the symbolic act of revival and rebirth of Mosul itself, improving the civil process of reinstating a sense of belonging and identity to all Moslawis.
